About
The Smokers
Debs is nineteen. She’s been let down by everyone in her life and recently things have gone from bad to worse.
When Debs signs up to learn beekeeping as a last-ditch attempt to get her life back on track, she meets Yeganeh, an Iranian refugee who is also disillusioned and struggling to find her place in a new country.
As Debs becomes more skilled and confident under Yeganeh’s expert watch, an unlikely friendship develops between the two women.
This is a play about life, friendship and bees.

Listen
The Smokers play was commissioned by Jim Cockburn after an unwelcoming reception at a bee keepers meeting when trying to set up his own hives.
He now has 12 hives but in establishing them up he found that he wasn’t alone in feeling that to some people bee keeping is an exclusive practice.
Originally commissioned for stage the play has been adapted as an audio drama.
